THE NATIONAL CHORALE OF JAMAICA ON A REPEAT VISIT TO OTTAWA APRIL 29th – May 6th, 2008 The National Chorale of Jamaica, an acclaimed group that has won vocal music awards in Jamaica and internationally, will be making their fifth visit to the Ottawa area from April 29 to May 6 to perform two concerts. The first concert will be in Shawville, Quebec, on Friday, May 2nd at 7:30pm, at Shawville United Church, Main Street. The choir, under the direction of Winston Ewart, will perform selections from the classics, as well as spirituals and folk songs. The accompanist is Ann McNamee. Tickets are $10 at the door. The second event will be a joint concert “Songs in Bloom”, with The Bytown Voices, with whom the national Chorale of Jamaica has held exchange visits over the past 12 years. This concert will be on Sunday, May 4 at 3:00pm at St Basil’s Church (Maitland Ave. just north of Hwy 417). Together the choirs will perform works by Vaughan Williams and Mendelssohn and each will present sacred and secular favourites in celebration of spring. Bytown Voices is under the direction of Robert Jones. Pianist and organist is Katarina Jovic. Tickets are $10 (adults) or $5 (students) at the door. The National Chorale of Jamaica will be billeted with members of the Bytown Voices choir for the week and will be carrying out excursions and sight-seeing in the Ottawa region. It quickly became renowned for excellence in a wide repertoire of choral works from folk music to the works of Mozart, Bach, Verdi and Brahms. The group continues to maintain high standards and has won the Jamaica Music Industry (JAMI) Award for the best vocal group-classical music. They have taken part in choral and cultural presentations staged in honour of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales and have performed in Mexico, Barbados and Canada. |
